Two Silver Incensory with Angle Figures in Erzurum Museum
Turkey, for which the museum is built on a land of ancient civilizations that have lived is very rich in terms of archaeological and ethnographic artefacts. In this study, two silver incensories with an angelic figure belonging to Christian liturgy in Erzurum Museum were examined. Our study started with a short history of the censer, and the importance of Christian liturgy was mentioned in the light of the fact that it entered the churches after the 4th century. Incensories found in Erzurum Museum were introduced in terms of their dimensions, material, construction and decoration techniques, forms and decorative features. In this part, incensories with similar characteristics found in the different museums and churches have also been compared in terms of their forms and ornamentation features. The angel figures on the bodies of the works were also evaluated with their iconographic meaning and the views on the connection between the symbolic meaning of the censer and the angel iconography were put forward. Since the incensories do not have any date, the suggestions for the production dates of incensories in the Museum have been offered by taking into consideration the form and decoration features and the works showing similar features in this respect.
