Egyptian Nationalist Movement and Turkish Foreign Policy (1924-1925
Egypt has a special place and importance in the Middle East. Governed by the Ottomans as a province for a long time, Egypt was ceded to the British in 1878 and the British rule continued after the World War I. So, Egyptians started a big struggle with the British for freedom. Zağlul Pasha was a person who foremost in this struggle. But in this struggle period, Egypt had been divided into many adverse parties. This situation prevented Egypt from a real freedom. Turkish national struggle was a reference for nations fighting against imperialists in the east and also Egypt. Egyptian people were extremely happy about Turkish freedom. That’s why nationalist Egyptians consulted and requested munition especially from Mustafa Kemal Pasha and leading persons for their freedom struggle. Also they obliged Turkey to support the Egyptian claim through very different ways and methods. By virtue of conjectural situation Turkish foreign policy did not approve to support directly and openly. On the contrary, indirect and passive aid policy was adopted by Turkish foreign policy.
