Characters in The Diwan of Emîrî
Mehmed b. Musa Pasha lived during the reign of Murad III (1574-1595) and was an admiral, a statesman and a poet. There is no information in the sources about his life. He sang poems by using a pseudonym of Emîrî. His father’s name is Musa and his mother’s name is Hanım. His father’s lineage belongs to Candaroğulları and his mother’s lineage belongs to Pîrî Mehmed Pasha who was a grand vizier in the Ottoman Empire.Emîrî had four diwans and two masnavis called Aşkname and İrâdetnâme. However, there is no information about his works except for his two divans. Emîrî sang poems of Sufism. He touched upon the qualities of Allah, miracles of the Prophet Muhammad and told about divine love and the beloved. Emîrî who wrote poetry in Persian, Turkish and Arabic often made use of figures of speech; allusion and quotation are mostly used poetic devices in his poetry. By making use of poetic devices in his poetry, Emîrî mentioned some religious figures such as prophets and four Khalifas, poets as Mawlana and Hâcû-yi Kirmânî, historical and mythological characters such as Cem and Kîsra; heroes of love stories such as Leyla and Ferhat. In this study, the characters in Emîrî’s Diwan are categorized and told after giving information about hislife. What characteristics of those characters were included have been told with sample couplets.
