Ahmet Hamdi Aksekı’s Struggle with Anti-Religious Movements
With the influence of Western thought, the last period of the Ottoman Empire was the scene of great intellectual struggles. Especially after the announcement of the Second Constitutional Monarchy, an important struggle against the rapidly spreading materialist thought has begun. The spiritualism that lies directly opposite this thought has also begun to spread and to be defended by many scholars and thinkers. Ahmet Hamdi Akseki, who grew up in such an environment of ideas, did not remain silent in the face of materialistic opposition to Islamic values, influencing and determining the world of Ottoman thought and he criticized Western-originated destructive thoughts in works he wrote and attempted to reveal the inconsistency of their claims. He tried to understand and explain Islam on the one hand, and to eliminate scientific opinions on negative views and thoughts on Islamic beliefs on the other hand. Our aim in this article is to show that Ahmet Hamdi Akseki is trying to emphasize the importance of religion and how he struggles with the destructive currents of thought of his time.
