From Past to Today Socio-Cultural Life of Yörüks in the Region of Bilecik
This region was of importance, because it became the heart during the foundation of Ottoman Empire. Bilecik, which was a township subject to Eskişehir, was attached to the sancak of Ertuğrul after 1885. The Yörüks that live in the region of Bilecik, are the members of Karakeçili tribe belonged to Kayı. Besides the Yörüks living in that region dispersedly, they live intensely in 15 villages. In our days, Yörük people are exposed to the transformation in every area as a result of rapidly changing conditions. In this study it aims to examine the general features of Yörük culture and the transformation taken place from past to today. Here, some observations have been made by visiting the Yörük villages in Bilecik and, the interviews have been realized with Yörük elders. The results obtained has been tried to be analyzed in the context of newspaper, archival material and secondary sources. This study may become important as to carry into future the values of Yörüks living in Bilecik, which fall into oblivion.
