Abstract


The Values on the Texts about Target Culture in C1 Course Books of Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language
The course books are the mostly used materials for teaching Turkish as a foreign language. The courses are generally conducted via following the course books inside of the curriculum. In terms of being effective and valid for teaching Turkish as a foreign language, it is expected that the course books are designed with the determined standards. One of these standards is to contain some texts for target culture of taught language. The values can be defined as the basic thought and principles that are aimed to be taught. One of the aims of teaching is to gain target values to students. The values given in texts which are used to teach Turkish as a foreign language are quite significant for international students’ perceptions on Turkish culture and Turkish people. In this study, the main reason of choosing texts for target culture is these texts’ vital role on presenting information and values of Turkish culture to international students. In this study, the sample is determined as the texts for target culture in the course book named Institute of Yunus Emre Turkish Language Teaching Set C1 due to the common use of it both in country and in abroad. The determination of values is concluded as considering the basic values prepared by Ministry of National Education. At the end of the study, it is seen that some of the values have often been used in texts for target culture to teach Turkish as a foreign language whereas some of the values have rarely been seen in those texts. In some texts for target culture, it is also stated that there have been some elements that might cause negative perception on learners in terms of Turkish people and Turkey.
