Anecdotes, which are one of the most common genres in Turkish oral literature, have both amusing and thought-provoking functions. “Types” and the “events” occurring around them become prominent in anecdotes. The features of the types and the cultural textures contributing to the creation of the types are seen to be effective in the formation of storylines and the establishment of the superstructure within logical framework. Beside the main character playing an effective role in the realization of the events, it is also observed that other persons are mentioned in the anecdotes as a part of the society. This community of people which can be defined as the cast of types should possess various connections with each other in accordance with the realities experienced in the anecdotes. These connections can be exemplified as neighborhood, friendship, marriage, military service etc. The anecdotes of Mullah Nasruddin have become prominent both in oral and written traditions in terms of the position of the anecdote genre in Turkish society within historical process. These anecdotes reflect a deep perspective of Turkish lifestyle, philosophy and belief system, and they also contain significant materials belonging to the relevant society. Turkish family structure can be considered as one of these materials. It can be said that the anecdotes represent the communicational methods and behavioral structures in domestic relationship and Turkish family structure, especially in Mullah Nasruddin’s own family. It is observed that the culture has impacts on the formation of this family structure. It is also noticed that this culture designs intrafamilial relations. In addition to this, the features of the main characters should be taken into consideration. Because Mullah Nasruddin blends the values that he represents within the limits of his own personality, and he develops different perspectives through various experiences.
