Abstract

ENGLISH CAPTIVES IN AFYONKARAHISAR CAPTIVE CAMP DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR YEARS ACCORDING TO ENGLISH ARCHIVE DOCUMENTS
The social, economical and societal effects of the First World War have been increasingly discussed in the academic literature in recent years. In this sense, studies on captives who are considered as war-wearies have increased day by day. Many scholars studied on this topic based on the Ottoman archive documents. However, most of these studies focus on Turkish captives. Besides, the ones that examine the captives held by Turkey are based on the Ottoman documents. At this point, examining the foreign documents revealing the case of the captives held by Turkey is important to provide data for comparative studies. For this reason, reflection and the evaluation of the English captives held by Turkey in the English archive documents are significantly important for the literature. Within this scope, this study aims to investigate how the social, health and economic situations of English captives in Afyonkarahisar captive camp during the First World War were reflected and evaluated in English archive documents. Based on this, the situations experienced by English captives in Turkey, their perceptions regarding the attitudes of Turks towards them, their criticism or satisfaction towards the camp, and the evaluation of English government regarding the camp will be revealed based on the case of Afyonkarahisar. The study is mainly based on the Foreign Office Documents of the National Archives in England. Official correspondences, letters of English captives, memories, petitions and reports written by state representatives take place in these documents.
